Where can parents find great books for children to read?

Let your children choose their own books and authors.

Share the ACT have numerous resourcesreading - read a page each or even a paragraph or sentence each depending on how much support your child needs with the book
Before you read with your child - talk casually about the book and booksset your child up for all ages. This is probablysuccess. Try these things:
Look through the best place to go for booksbook and advice on books for your child. Click onat the link to the ACT virtual library to findillustrations and discuss these together
Point out library locationsany tricky words and informationtell these to your child
Talk about what you think the book is about
For longer books and othertry reading material.
Every yearone or two chapters to your child to help them 'get into' the Childrens Book Council of Australia awards prizes for excellent new books and authors. Clickbook
Reading is about meaning so if your child reads a word that is incorrect but means the same thing then let them read on because all good readers do this
Let the link to find the shortlisted books forreading flow - don't stop them each time they incorrectly read a word - chances are they will realise this year.
The ACT Department of Educationthemselves further along and Training (DET) runs the Chief Ministers Reading Challenge. As part of the challenge, lists of great books for children from Kinder to Year 8self correct
If what they are listedreading doesn't make sense just ask "That didn't make sense to me can you read it again?"
If your child comes to a word they don't know and gets stuck say "try reading on the Chief Ministers Reading Challenge website. This is a wonderful sourcebit to see if you can work out what word makes sense there"
Introduce new books to your child enthusiastically - its like giving them a delicious smorgasbord of book titles for childrenchoice, but let them choose and adolescents. Clickalso let them have their own opinions about whether they like particular books
Reading material can include magazines, information books, brochures, newspapers, recipe books, songs and poems, websites and more
Change locations if reading becomes tedious - try reading on the link and visit the website.
